2 pedestrians fatally struck by vehicle in eastern Australia-Xinhua

SYDNEY, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Two pedestrians have died after they were hit by a vehicle in the eastern Australian state of New South Wales on Sunday night. A police statement said that the male pedestrians, aged 70 and 55, were struck by an SUV while walking along a roadway in the coastal town of Tura Beach, 350 km south of Sydney, around 9:30 p.m. local time on Sunday. Both men died at the scene. The 45-year-old female driver of the SUV was not injured and was taken to the hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing. Police said that local officers established a crime scene and were awaiting the arrival of specialist investigators. ■ Source link

Daylight saving time begins in parts of Australia-Xinhua

CANBERRA, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Daylight saving time began in parts of Australia on Sunday, with clocks moving forward by one hour. At 2:00 a.m. local standard time, clocks were advanced to 3:00 a.m. in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia. The change means residents in those states and territories will have an extra hour of daylight in the evening during the warmer months. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not observe daylight saving time, leaving mainland Australia across five time zones. Daylight saving in the participating states and territories runs from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April.
