BRASILIA, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Voting in the first round of Brazil's 2026 presidential election officially began at 8 a.m. (1100 GMT) on Sunday, with polling stations across the country scheduled to close at 5 p.m. (0800 GMT). Initial results are expected to be announced within a few hours after the polls close. Recent opinion polls showed incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of the ruling Workers' Party and Flavio Bolsonaro, the presidential candidate of Brazil's Liberal Party and son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, leading the race with a significant advantage over other candidates. ■

CANBERRA, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Daylight saving time began in parts of Australia on Sunday, with clocks moving forward by one hour. At 2:00 a.m. local standard time, clocks were advanced to 3:00 a.m. in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia. The change means residents in those states and territories will have an extra hour of daylight in the evening during the warmer months. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not observe daylight saving time, leaving mainland Australia across five time zones. Daylight saving in the participating states and territories runs from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April.
