Haiti extends candidate registration, delays campaign for December elections-Xinhua

PANAMA CITY, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council has extended the deadline for candidate registration to Oct. 31 and postponed the start of campaigning for presidential and legislative elections scheduled for December, local media reported Tuesday. Registration had been due to close Oct. 9. In a statement dated Monday, the council said the extension applies to both online registration and the submission of required documents. The first-round campaign, originally scheduled to begin Oct. 5, has also been postponed, with new dates to be announced later. Spain extends border checks on arrivals from Italy for another 15 days-Xinhua

MADRID, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Spain has extended temporary border checks on travelers arriving from Italy by air and sea for another 15 days, until Oct. 22, according to an Interior Ministry order published in the Official State Gazette on Tuesday. The extension will run from Oct. 8 to Oct. 22. It is the third extension of the checks, which were first introduced on Aug. 8. The order, signed by Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska on Oct. 1, said the reasons for the measure, including serious threats to public order and internal security, remained in place.
