ISTANBUL, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Turkish security forces detained 4,237 people in counter-terrorism operations in Istanbul during the first nine months of 2026, up 20 percent year on year, Istanbul Governor Davut Gul said Monday.

Gul made the remarks at a live-streamed press briefing on the city's law enforcement and public security data for the first nine months of the year.

Of those detained in counter-terrorism operations, 826 were arrested and 639 were placed under judicial control, according to Gul.

He said Istanbul, which receives nearly 20 million tourists and has around 1 million foreign residents, had also stepped up its fight against organized crime.

Turkish security forces frequently conduct operations across the country, including in Istanbul, against suspects linked to militant groups, including the Islamic State. ■
