TOKYO, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) — Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher Monday, with the Nikkei stock index rising above the 70,000 mark for the first time since early July.
At 10:37 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 1,714.81 points, or 2.51 percent, from Friday’s close to 70,024.27.
The broader Topix index, meanwhile, was up 45.61 points, or 1.11 percent, at 4,136.61.
Market sentiment was lifted by gains on Wall Street as expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike this month receded following weaker-than-expected U.S. nonfarm payrolls data for September. ■
