Japan’s benchmark Nikkei reclaims 70,000 for 1st time since July-Xinhua

TOKYO, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher Monday, with the Nikkei stock index rising above the 70,000 mark for the first time since early July. At 10:37 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 1,714.81 points, or 2.51 percent, from Friday's close to 70,024.27. The broader Topix index, meanwhile, was up 45.61 points, or 1.11 percent, at 4,136.61. Market sentiment was lifted by gains on Wall Street as expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike this month receded following weaker-than-expected U.S. nonfarm payrolls data for September. ■ Source link

U.S. Marine arrested on suspicion of robbery-murder in Japan’s Okinawa-Xinhua

TOKYO, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. Marine stationed in Japan's Okinawa Prefecture was arrested by police on Sunday on suspicion of robbery and murder in connection with the killing of a woman at a hotel in Naha on Saturday, in which her belongings were taken, public broadcaster NHK reported.
